Tektites are the strange cousins of the meteorite world: not space rocks themselves, but Earth rock melted and flung by a meteorite impact. When a large body strikes, the heat vaporises and liquefies the ground; droplets of that molten terrestrial glass arc through the upper atmosphere and rain down tens or hundreds of kilometres away, cooling in flight into the pitted, sculpted forms collectors prize.
Vess Green is a translucent bottle-green glass with a deeply etched, wrinkled surface — the natural sculpting left by fifteen million years of gentle terrestrial etching after the glass formed. Hold a good piece to the light and it glows. The finest specimens are museum pieces; ours are honest, characterful individuals with strong colour and lively surface texture.
We grade it 8.8. It is glass, so it chips if you drop it, but it needs none of the humidity fuss of an iron and it displays beautifully with nothing but a stand and a window. A rewarding specimen that costs far less than it looks.
